FBD League football is not the most glamorous in early January, but still its great to be back on the road again! Leitrim were the far stronger team yesterday up in Ballinamore, and the scoring showed it. Mayo were 0-5 to 0-0 down with Darren Coen ( who was a late replacement for Even Regan ) scoring our first point in the 18th minute.
I was looking forward to seeing how Jason Gibbons would perform in midfield. He started off the match pretty good I thought, unfortunately he sustained a serious injury to his finger, which by the roars he was giving out it sounded pretty serious.
He was replaced by Barry Moran. Word went around the stand that he had a suspected fractured knuckle, but I was talking to Jason after the match and as he said himself it was “only” a dislocated finger.
The second half was a little livelier though it never looked like we were going to pull ahead of Leitrim, Emlyn Mulligan had an outstanding game. We were only able to draw level with them I think twice, our last point of the game scored by Darren Coen which at first was waived wide by umpire but after consultation by the ref with the sideline official, the ref awarded the point! A late free in injury time by Emlyn Mulligan sealed the win for Leitrim.
Full match reports can be found on Willie Joe’s site Mayo Gaa Blog. The ongoing row between Joe “Brollix” Brolly and James Horan has escaleted some what over the weekend with different articles in the papers. He really is an annoying little twirp and I’m glad someone has finally pulled him up on his comments about Mayo 3 days before the All-Ireland Final last year. There’s a good article in todays Independent by Tommy Conlon which can be found here.
I have all the photos from yesterdays match uploaded to my online album here.
